About the project

The Gorman-Shore Learning Centre operates all week long during after-school hours: Three times a week, students receive individualized instruction for remedial or homework/test preparation; a personal counselor works together with the child’s family unit and his/her school to personalize these academic sessions. Twice weekly, the Learning Centre offers social and sports activities for learning centre participants. Throughout the week, the centre’s participants have access to soccer and table tennis stations and to a sympathetic support system. Hence for many of the children – who often have no one waiting for them at home in the afternoon – the centre is their choice after-school destination, even when activities are not in session. It is more than a centre for academic resources, more even than an opportunity to have fun: the Learning Centre offers a “home-away-from-home” for disadvantaged children who crave the stability of this consistently supportive environment. The Learning Centre currently serves fifty children from the local neighbourhood. Most of these youngsters come from homes identified as “high risk” household environments, and as such can particularly benefit from what the Learning Centre has to offer.
