About the project

Shekel (an acronym for Community Services for People with Disabilities) is a voluntary, umbrella organization founded in 1979 to provide community services for Jerusalem children and adults with special needs. Shekel was a pioneer in adopting social welfare and rehabilitation practices that preclude institutionalization. Nearly 4,000 people with physical, intellectual, emotional, mental and learning disabilities participate in Shekel programs in Jerusalem and other places in Israel, including its assessment, education, communal living, vocational rehabilitation, leisure and sports activities. The Jerusalem Foundation has supported many Shekel activities, including its summer camp programs.
