About the project

THE AUSTRALIAN YARD donated by the San Diego Friends of the Tisch Family Zoo and headed by Robert Price.
“The Australian Dream”
The exhibit opened December 2004 and is associated with“Dreamtime” the spiritual history of the Aborigines, also known as “The Time before Time”This is reference to the aboriginal stories of the creation and the beginning of all the animals of Australia. Not surprisingly, the grey kangeroos are the big attraction, not as big as the red’s, the grey’s are still relatively large, an adult male can weigh as much as 122 pounds. They are the most well known of Australian animals. Wallabies, are smaller and belong to the same family, and they also carry their young in a pouch. The kangaroo’s family name, Macropodidae, means “big feet,” along with the Bearded dragons, blue tongued skinks (lizards) and the grey headed fox, all make for an interesting exhibit..
